BUCKHEAD, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — After a sluggish start to the season, the Atlanta Braves are searching for a spark.
That’s why the team has ordered a series of new, innovative bats gaining popularity across Major League Baseball.
The Braves will soon be using torpedo bats, an unconventional design used by the New York Yankees.
The Yankees hit 15 homers through the first three games of this season, matching the 2006 Detroit Tigers for the most in Major League history.
Anthony “True” Benson Jr., an instructor at D-BAT Buckhead, has been blown away by the torpedo bats.

“Hitting a round ball with a round bat, it’s pretty hard,” Benson said. “So, if you can make a bigger target on that bat, to make contact, any hitter will love that.”
The wood on the bat is shifted lower on the barrel, creating a silhouette that resembles a bowling pin. Benson described how the unique weight distribution affects performance.
“With them moving the barrel towards the label and making more of a fatter bat within the middle of the bat, it helps with more success and making better contact,” he said.
Major League Baseball has confirmed the bats are legal and meet league standards.
While the torpedo bats are not yet available for public sale, they are being tested and used by professional players.

“If you’ve seen other teams succeed and it’s legal, I say go about it, use it and see what it does for you,” Benson said. “I don’t think that just a bat would do everything for you. Still have to be a ballplayer, still have to make solid contact.”
It’s unclear when Braves players might start using the bats in games.
Atlanta has its home opener Friday night at Truist Park against the Miami Marlins. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
