ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - In 1881, Black women in Atlanta led the Washerwoman Strike, during which thousands of workers successfully demanded higher pay and self-regulation. And now in 2024, that strike is the center of a new stage play called “The Wash.”

Playwright Kelundra Smith and director Brenda Porter visited Atlanta News First to discuss the play and its history. The cast and creative team are all female, the two said, crafting a personal and often humorous story about everyday women who fought the system and won.

The play will be performed at Midtown’s Synchronicity Theatre through June 30. Wednesdays are pay-what-you-can for tickets. Then from July 10-28, the play goes to Hapeville’s Impact Theatre, after which it hits St. Louis, New York City and Chicago.
