ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Georgia Tech has locked down head football coach Brent Key and Athletic Director J Batt for another two years, the school announced Friday.
The extensions will keep the pair in Atlanta through 2029.
Batt became Georgia Tech’s athletics director in October 2022. One of his first major moves was hiring Key as the full-time head football coach. The move has paid off; Key is 18-15 in two-and-a-half seasons at the helm, including the eight games after Geoff Collins’ firing in 2022.
Key is 14-11 as the Yellow Jackets’ full-time head coach, including back-to-back bowl-eligible seasons, the first for Georgia Tech since 2013 and 2014. Georgia Tech beat UCF in the 2023 Gasparilla Bowl.
He has also made Tech a formidable recruiter, gathering 18th-best class in 2025 according to 247Sports.

Batt’s achievements extend well beyond the Key hire. Batt hired former Boston Celtics assistant Damon Stoudamire as men’s basketball head coach; Stoudamire went 14–18 in his first season last year and has the Jackets out to a 4-4 start this year.
Georgia Tech’s golf squad has made consecutive NCAA semifinals under Batt.
Off the field, Batt inked a multi-decade partnership with Hyundai, raised a record-breaking $78.2 million in contributions to Georgia Tech athletics’ fundraising arm and launched another $500 million fundraising initiative, according to the school.
“J Batt has demonstrated exceptional leadership as Georgia Tech’s athletic director, bringing a strategic vision and enthusiasm that have been instrumental in navigating the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics,” said Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera. “I am delighted that the Georgia Tech Athletics Association Board supports contract extensions for both J and head football coach Brent Key, ensuring that we continue to build on the prestige they have brought to our athletics program.”
Batt’s extension also includes a promotion to vice president.
