Juan and Gee Smalls, the restaurant’s owners, came to the studio to talk about their establishment. Hailing from the Lowcountry, the Gullah Geechee people are known for their rich culture, which is tightly connected to their ancestors from West and Central Africa.

Gee grew up on James Island in South Carolina, and most of the restaurant’s recipes are based on dishes handed down from family members. He said the restaurant is named after his late father, Virgil.
