ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - If you know anything about baseball fans, they travel far and wide to see as many ballparks as they can in their lifetime.
Petco Park in San Diego is always on that list. Yes, it’s in San Diego, but there’s also no other ballpark quite like it.
And it all begins with the brick building seen down the left field line.
Petco Park officially opened in 2004. But its first bricks were actually laid almost 100 years earlier.
In 1978, the four-story Western Metal Supply Company warehouse was named a historic landmark in San Diego.

So, when it came time to build a downtown ballpark, the Padres built around it.
Because of the Western Metal Building, there’s actually no left field foul pole — another Petco Park quirk.
Not only did they build around it, they improved it.
Which is pretty much the Padres’ MO — committing to improve the baseball experience for the fans and players. Which is why in 2012, they moved the fences in to help make a notoriously pitcher’s ballpark a little more fair for the hitters — like Truist Park in Atlanta.
The Braves will take on the Padres in their season opener on Thursday at Petco Park. First pitch is at 4:10 p.m. EST.
