ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Atlanta Braves open a three-game series against the Miami Marlins on Friday, marking the second of 15 games broadcast on Gray Media in 2025. And after seven games on the road, it also marks the home opener.
But things haven’t necessarily gone Atlanta’s way in the first week of the season. In fact, it’s been hard to grasp how unlucky the team has been thus far.
First off, the team lost its first seven games, it’s worst start since 2016. Prized free agency signing Jurickson Profar was suspended for 80 games after testing positive for Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG) in violation of the league’s joint drug prevention and treatment program. And, for the cherry on top, starting pitcher Reynaldo López was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.
López’s injury is the newest of injuries among Atlanta’s roster, as the team has already dealt with numerous injuries to open the season.
The Braves on March 25 placed right-hander Spencer Strider (right elbow UCL reconstruction), outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (left knee reconstruction), catcher Sean Murphy (fractured left ribcage), infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. (left wrist inflammation) and right-hander Joe Jimenez (left knee articular cartilage injury) on the 15-day injured list, with all moves retroactive to March 24.

As for López, it’s unknown whether he’ll pitch again in 2025, and arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder will help the team better understand his condition. He’ll most certainly miss the first half of the season but could miss the rest of the season if things are worse than expected.
Here’s the full injury report:
- Ronald Acuña Jr. (torn left ACL) - expected to return the first half of May
- Nacho Alvarez Jr. (left wrist inflammation) - expected return is mid-April
- Joe Jimenez (left knee surgery) - will not return before August, could miss entirety of 2025
- Reynaldo López (right shoulder inflammation) - expected return is TBD
- Sean Murphy (cracked ribs) - expected to return the first half of April
- Spencer Strider (April 2024 elbow surgery) - expected return is mid-April
The Braves will take on the Marlins in their home opener on Friday at Truist Park. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m. EST.
