Swim coach gives 5 essential water safety tips ahead of summer Geordan Colden, the owner of Drip No Drown Swimming, came to Atlanta News First to talk about water safety.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Summer officially begins next Friday, June 20, which means it will be peak pool, beach and lake season.

That’s why Geordan Colden, the owner of Drip No Drown Swimming, came to Atlanta News First to talk about water safety. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4, according to the CDC.

Colden offered these five tips:

  1. Always stay within arm’s reach.
  2. Practice how to get into and out of the water safely.
  3. Know the “reach, throw, don’t go” rule. If you see someone drowning, try to reach them or throw them a flotation device instead of jumping into the water.
  4. Teach breath control and floating in the water.
  5. Enroll in swimming lessons.
