Rosters: A history of the MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta

Hank Aaron and Chipper Jones blasted home runs in 1972 and 2000 in Atlanta’s first two all-star contests.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Metro Atlanta is hosting its third Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 15, at Truist Park.

Current Atlanta Braves stars Ronald Acuña Jr., Chris Sale and Matt Olson will be on their home field - as National League all stars.

In 1972, Atlanta Braves legend and future home run king Hank Aaron was a starter when the contest came to Atlanta Stadium (in 1976, Fulton County leaders threatened to withdraw financial support if the stadium’s name wasn’t changed to Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium).

Aaron went 1-for-3 in that game with a home run and two RBIs; he was the only Brave on the NL All-Star roster in 1972, as the National League won 4-3 in 10 innings against the American League.

In 2000, the All-Star Game came to Turner Field, when Braves third-baseman Chipper Jones, on his way to a Hall of Fame career himself, went 3-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored.

Two more future Cooperstown, New York, inductees - pitchers Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine - were on the roster, as were first baseman Andrés Galarraga and outfielder Andruw Jones as reserves.

Braves manager Bobby Cox became one of the few men to ever manage an All-Star Game in his team’s home stadium.

The American League defeated the National League, 6-3, in the last All-Star Game ever broadcast on NBC.
