ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Actor and singer Jussie Smollett is ready to “Break Out” with a new album!
Smollett came to Atlanta News First to talk about the album “Break Out,” which is being made in partnership with Grammy Award-winning producer Dallas Austin. He also discussed a Netflix documentary about a 2019 incident in which he was accused of staging a hate crime.
Smollett was convicted of five counts of disorderly conduct, but was later acquitted by the Illinois Supreme Court, which overturned the ruling in 2024.
According to Smollett, the album is about freedom — including freedom from misconceptions about himself stemming from the incident.
“We’re in a place in the world, and in this country, where we’re talking at each other,” he said. “And I think if we take a little time to talk to each other, we would get to know the truth a little faster instead of having to go around in a strange circle and finally find our way back to the truth.”
“Break Out” releases on Sept. 30.
