Braves sign 11 international free agents, including Dominican Republic’s Manon

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Atlanta Braves announced Thursday the signings of 11 international free agents, headlined by star Dominican Republic shortstop Jose Manon, the No. 15 prospect in MLB’s Top 50 list.

It’s the third year in a row that the Braves have signed a top 15 international prospect, making them one of just three clubs to have done so in that span, including the New York Mets and Seattle Mariners.

Manon is expected to receive a signing bonus of around $1.5 million.

The 17-year-old Manon went 8-for-26 with seven RBIs and 7-for-7 on stolen-base attempts across nine games during his time in the Amateur Scouting League. He is 6-foot-2, has a high-contact rate and plays exceptional defense.

An international player may sign with a major league team during the signing period from Jan. 15 to Dec. 15. To be eligible, the player must be 16 years old at the time of signing and turn 17 by Sept. 1 of the following year. As a result, players born between Sept. 1, 2008, and Aug. 31, 2009, are eligible to sign during the current signing period.
