Braves sign 1B Rowdy Tellez to minor league deal, report says

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Braves have signed first baseman Rowdy Tellez to a minor league deal, Jon Heyman of the New York Post said.

The 31-year-old slashed .228/.276/.443 in 112 games last year for the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. He also went 1-for-9 with two strikeouts and two walks for Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.

Tellez would likely begin the season at Triple-A Gwinnett, but there is a path for him to make the major league roster as either a designated hitter or bench bat. Veteran Dominic Smith hit .258/.343/.387 in spring training, but has an opt-out he can exercise. Should Smith exercise the opt-out, that opens a path for Tellez to make the roster and receive regular playing time.
