ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Braves have chosen six players from each of the six decades they’ve been an Atlanta-based franchise to mark their 60th season in the deep South.
The players will be honored Friday as the Braves opened their 2026 season.
- 1960’s - Joe Torre is a Hall of Fame baseball figure best known as the New York Yankees manager (1996–2007), winning four World Series titles (1996, 1998–2000). He was also a standout MLB player— an MVP in 1971 with the St. Louis Cardinals — and later managed the New York Mets, Braves, and Cardinals. After managing, he served MLB in executive roles, including as a senior baseball operations official.
- 1970’s - Ralph Garr is a former MLB outfielder best known with the Atlanta Braves in the 1970s, earning the nickname, “The Road Runner.” He won the1974 National League batting title (.353) and was a key part of the Braves’ lineup alongside Hank Aaron. Garr also played for the Chicago White Sox, California Angels, and San Diego Padres, finishing with more than 2,000 hits and a reputation as a tough, contact-heavy hitter.
- 1980’s - Dale Murphy is a former outfielder/first baseman and one of the most popular Braves players in history. He won back-to-back NL MVPs (1982, 1983); made seven All-Star teams; captured five Gold Gloves; and won four Silver Sluggers. He played most of his career in Atlanta, and later with the Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies.
- 1990’s - Sid Bream is a former MLB first baseman best known to Braves fans for scoring the dramatic winning run in game seven of the 1992 National League Championship Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, sending Atlanta to the World Series. He played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Braves.
- 2000’s - Larry Wayne “Chipper” Jones Jr., is a Hall of Famer who spent his entire major league career (1993–2012) with Atlanta. A switch-hitting third baseman, he was the 1999 NL MVP; an eight-time All-Star, and a key part of the Braves’ 1995 World Series championship. He finished with a .303 career average, 468 HR, and 1,623 RBI, and is one of the best-hitting third basemen in MLB history.
- 2010’s - Brian McCann is a former MLB catcher best known for the Atlanta Braves, where he debuted in 2005 and became a cornerstone player. He’s a seven-time All-Star; won a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger; and is one of the most productive catchers of his era. McCann also played for the New York Yankees, Houston Astros (winning the 2017 World Series), and Los Angeles Dodgers, then returned to finish his career with Atlanta in 2019.
