ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Atlanta Braves are well underway into spring training, and Atlanta News First is broadcasting four games this week— which began Tuesday with a home matchup against the Detroit Tigers and will conclude Friday against the New York Yankees.
On Thursday, Carlos Carrasco will take the mound again for the Braves. The 38-year-old right-hander owns a 6.36 ERA dating back to the start of 2023 and surrendered 15 runs over 13.2 innings (three starts) with Atlanta last season. He opened his spring with two scoreless innings, striking out three — an encouraging early showing.
Carrasco remains a long shot to secure a spot in the rotation, but with Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep sidelined, his experience gives the Braves valuable pitching depth.

Competition in camp remains tight. The primary battles center on the final bench spot, the last opening in the rotation and the remaining bullpen roles.
Bryce Elder made his spring debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits in two innings of work. He is the favorite to claim the final rotation spot ahead of opening day.

Three of the four bench spots appear to be claimed by infielder Jorge Mateo, catcher Jonah Heim and utilityman Eli White. Kyle Farmer, Ben Gamel and Dominic Smith are among the candidates vying for the final spot.
